Graduated in 2008 and decided that finding people jobs when jobs were being axed would be a doddle. Now jobs are plentiful but skilled building control professional are not.

Managing to navigate the impossible, whether thatโs finding someone a position who has a really unique set of circumstances and theyโve given up hope of ticking everything off their shopping list. Or, having a position that has been impossible to fill for a long time. There is always a solution to these things. You just have to work harder to do them. It tests your tenacity at times.

Weโre a much more grown-up business. Rather than having a heavy sales approach means we arenโt pushed to hit targets that hinder the industry or the service we are providing. Its focussed-on delivery not hitting the calls, meetings or approaches targets that other recruitment businesses. We operate as a commercially successful business because we donโt waste time or make stupid promises.

I never buy anything newโฆ I spend most weekends in charity shops dragging my niece round for company. Thereโs no downside โ itโs cheaper, sustainable and means your money is (hopefully) going to some good use. Plus, you need to go to nice areas for a good calibre of charity shop. Which usually means we can have tea and cake, too.

The future of building control is concerning on some levels. Weโve always needed new people in the industry and while there are green shoots of that happening, many have left the industry this year. Itโs also an aging workforce with retirement within 10 years for many of the experts in the industry. With these shortages can mean more opportunity though, hence the rise in contract positions, the emergence of the PD role and the chance for many to progress to peer review more junior members of staff. For me, it means working with people a bit differently. Everyone will have more they need to get out of recruiters. On both sides of the equation.
